Biography

Ursula was born in 1609 at Ulcombe, Kent, the daughter of Warham St Leger and Mary Hayward.[1]

She and Daniel Horsmanden received on 9 August 1627 a licence to marry[2] and were wed 27 August 1627 in All Saints Church at Ulcombe, Kent.[3] She was 18 years of age, and Daniel was about 44 (his birth year was incorrectly listed in their marriage record as being 1587, but he was baptised in 1583).[4] They had six children:

  1. Warham Horsmanden, bp. 5 Sep 1628[5]
  2. Mary Horsmanden, bp. 20 Sep 1631[6]
  3. Richard Horsmanden, bp. 31 Oct 1632[7]
  4. Anthony Horsmanden, bp. 25 Apr 1635[8]
  5. David Horsmanden[1]
  6. Susanna Horsmanden Chapman[1]

Ursula's husband was a well respected scholar and cleric, but he was also an outspoken royalist. In 1643 he was sequestered by parliament for affirming that "the late Deputy of Ireland was put to death wrongfully, and was sacrificed as our Saviour Christ was, to give people content."[9] He was evicted from his position as Vicar of Ulcombe and fined heavily, as well as being accused publicly of other offences such as "malicious actions toward parliament" and "having an aversion to weekday sermons." [9] The impact of the sequestration was enormous on his family. They struggled financially for years afterward and never fully recovered.

Ursula Horsmanden outlived her husband by about sixteen years. There is some indication that, in the year following Daniel's death, she may have gone to Virginia to live with her oldest son Warham and his young family.[10] If that was the case, she almost certainly returned to England with them sometime after 1660. She died in 1672 and was buried 18 October 1672 at All Saints Church in Ulcombe, Kent, where her family had worshiped for generations.[11]

Ursula is the mother of Gateway Ancestor Warham Horsmanden. Ursula appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented, project-approved/badged trail (reviewed in 2020 by a Magna Carta Project member) from Warham to Magna Carta Surety Baron Robert de Vere (vol. III, pages 481-484 SAINT LEGER). This profile is also a part of trails reviewed/approved in 2015 by the Magna Carta project from her sister, Gateway Katherine St Leger, to several other surety barons, including: Saher de Quincy, Hugh le Bigod, Roger le Bigod, Gilbert de Clare, Richard de Clare, John Fitz Robert, and John de Lacy. All these trails can be viewed in the Magna Carta Trails section of her son's profile.
Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry (volume I, page 171, footnote 107) notes that Gateway Ancestors St. Leger Codd, Edward Digges, Warham Horsmanden, and Katherine Saint Leger are descendants of Warham and Ursula (Neville) Saint Leger.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

St. Ledger-1 and St Leger-159 appear to represent the same person because: St Leger is the correct LNAB (aka no period) but -159 has the right sources & parents.
